It seems that every aspect of Vincent Van Gogh's psychological fragility has already been analysed: his bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and its his attacks of delirium accompanied by hallucinations, and their direct impact on his work and his way of seeing the world. A more traditional approach to his work demonstrates, first of all, that the artist turned to an art which was seemingly the very opposite of what he produced. He was very much inspired by the work of Japanese artist Hiroshige. This artist's entire philosophy was based on strength, composition, serenity, travelling and inner peace. Through some forty works, mainly landscapes, the exhibition at the Pinacothèque in Paris - which is the first devoted solely to the Dutch artist in Paris for decades - offers a clear demonstration of the importance of Japonism in Impressionist art. |
