Versailles and the antique exhibition The town of Versailles was a new Rome for several reasons, notably its excess, its ambition through the centuries and the many references to the great models of antiquity. In the seventeenth century antiquity constituted an insuperable absolute, with which the most ambitious rulers wanted to compete. Indeed, it was to revive this ancient grandeur that King Louis XIV created Versailles as his seat of power.
This exhibition, at the Château de Versailles, has brought about the return to Versailles of some fifty antiques, which featured there in the Old Regime.
The interpretation of antiquity and ancient mythology are evoked in around 200 works from major French and international collections comprised of sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, tapestries, furniture and objets d'art.

Curators: Alexandre Maral and Nicolas Milovanovic, curators at Château de Versailles and Jean-Luc Martinez, curator at the Musée du Louvre.
