Carmen opera A profound, rich and tireless masterpiece of light, dark, and powerfully emotional music, Carmen remains an essential work that helps define opera music.
Bizet had just several years left to live when he began working on Carmen. At its creation, in 1875, he became the victim of censors who judged his work indecent and by a public who was largely indifferent to his opera. It wasn't until it was completely arranged as an opera and presented in Vienna that the opera gained the success it deserved. Bizet died in 1875 on the evening of the show's 31st representation; over time his work became one of the greatest operas of all time.
