Red and Black: Luynes’ greek vases

 The famous collection of the Duke of Luynes donated to the Bibliothèque nationale in 1862 includes Greek vases, which although not very numerous, are the most important in terms of preciousness. From 1820 to 1850, the collector succeeded in gathering an outstanding collection of figure-vases which were mostly discovered during Italian archaeological excavations (in Etruria and Magna Graecia).Most of them come from 5th and 6th century Athenian workshops and illustrate the Greek craftmen’s skills. They offer an exceptional directory of beautiful images. Mythical figures are widely illustrated: Olympian gods, heroes (Heracles, Theseus, Ulysse…); the Dyonisiac universe is particularly present on vases illustrating wine consumption and intented to be used during drinking parties. Iconography also discloses certain aspects of the Athenian everyday life: athletics, war and seduction. This exhibition will be a rare opportunity to present all vases of the collection. A didactic presentation will allow visitors to enjoy both the painters’ skill and the iconography particularly rich in meaning. Discovering this homogeneous collection also disclose the taste of one of the major collectors of the 19th century. |
